Margot Sell

Graduate/Professional Representative
In 2022, Margot received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (Biochemistry)
with Honors from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). With her experience
working at the Massey Cancer Research Center, coupled with her passion for
serving marginalized communities as the founder of Help the Unhoused at VCU,
Margot intends to apply her higher education towards advocacy, empowerment,
and achieving the next greatest feat.
 
Currently, Margot is a second-year student at VCU School of Dentistry with
dreams of becoming a future Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. While serving as the
President of the Class of 2026, Margot is a teaching assistant (TA) for VCU’s
Statistics Department and a chairperson for VCU’s Student Conduct & Academic
Integrity (SCAI) office. In her free time, Margot loves traveling to different
countries, cooking new recipes, teaching Hebrew, and challenging others in chess.

Leila Griffin 

Undergraduate Representative

Leila is a senior in the Health and Exercise Science program at VCU, with a minor in dance. Alongside her role as a BOV representative, Leila works within the Healthy Heart Lab, is a STEM Transfer Mentor, and is involved with various research programs at VCU. Leila enjoys VCU’s diversity. urban community setting, and the various opportunities and activities regarding inclusivity that it has to offer. Outside of school, Leila enjoys dancing, dabbling in new hobbies, and relaxing with family! 

 

Application Process

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply and serve as a student representative, a student must:

  1. Be enrolled as a VCU full-time student in good standing
  2. Maintain continuous VCU full-time enrollment throughout the representative term
  3. Availability to attend board meetings and planning meetings with the Vice President for Student Affairs.
  4.  Application is available in late January each year - with a deadline to apply by middle of February.

Selection Process

  1. The President will recommend one graduate/professional student and one undergraduate to serve as either the student representative or the alternate from lists submitted by a selection committee, chaired by the Vice President for Student Affairs, or their designee, which would include representation from the student governments on each campus of the University.
  2. The student representative and the alternate student representative to the Board of Visitors will be appointed for a one-year term effective July 1 of each year. The student representative and the alternate student representative will be nonvoting representatives and will not be allowed to attend closed sessions of the Board.
  3. The student representative and the alternate student representative to the Board of Visitors will serve as nonvoting representatives to the Academic and Health Affairs Committee of the Board. The student representative and the alternate student representative will not serve as a representative to any other Board Committee.
  4. The alternate student representative will not have official status but will be invited to attend full Board meetings and the Academic and Health Affairs Committee meeting with voice but no vote.
  5. The BOV meets four times a year, typically in September, December, March, and May. Current dates and times are listed online.
