First Year Mentees
First year students in ELP are categorized as ‘mentees'. Mentees are paired with second year mentors who guide and encourage them throughout the year. Mentees and mentors will work in groups through the year on what we call “SuperPod Projects.” Click the “Our Projects” tab on the left to read about some of the successful projects we have done in past years. These projects are year-long group efforts to improve the VCU Campus and greater Richmond Community. Doing these projects with your peers will help you gain time management, leadership, teambuilding, some financial planning skills, and it will help you foster connections throughout the university and community. Mentees will also enroll in one class per semester for this program. Students will enroll in UNIV 270 in the fall and LDRS 200 in the spring. See course descriptions below.
UNIV 270 – 3 Credit Hours
This seminar will provide an overview of the theories, models, and perspectives of the field of leadership studies. Students will explore leadership in terms of the role of the leader, the role of the follower, and the context in which leadership occurs. With an emphasis on practical application of leadership theory, students will evaluate their own leadership experiences in terms of the course content, while also exploring contemporary examples of leadership.
LDRS 200 – 1 Credit Hour
This seminar will introduce students to leadership by exploring a variety of historical and contemporary leaders and discussing the impact of their leadership on the world. Students will also discuss the ways in which their own leadership development can contribute to their success both in the classroom and their community.
We have one hour meetings from 5-6PM on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. These meetings are mandatory for all students to regroup as a program.
The 1st year Mentees will receive a $1,000 scholarship for the first semester and have the opportunity for a renewed scholarship for second semester if the Mentee meets specified goals.
