Travel Clinic

University Student Health Services offers free in-depth travel consultations for students planning to travel abroad.  Consultations include a review of recommended vaccines, travel-related prescriptions, and safety information.  Student Health also offers many of the vaccines recommended for international travel.

Scheduling An Appointment

Plan ahead! At least 6 to 8 weeks prior to your departure date, call Student Health to request a travel appointment because some travel vaccines take several weeks to become effective.  Appointments are available on both the Monroe Park and VCU Medical Center campuses.

  • Schedule two appointments back-to-back:Travel Appointment (30 minutes), followed by a Nurse Appointment for vaccine administration (30 minutes).
  • Once you have scheduled your appointments, you will be able to access Student Health's electronic Travel Health Form through our Web Portal.  Please log on and complete this form prior to your appointment.
  • If you are doing a study abroad AND your host school requires a physical exam or statement of overall health, you will need to 1) schedule a Physical Exam for Travel plus Travel Appointment (45 minutes), followed by a Nurse Appointment for vaccine administration (30 minutes); 2) bring your school forms (with your part completed!) to the appointment; and 3) complete Student Health's Travel Health Form via the Web Portal.

Special consultation appointments are available for student groups participating in study abroad programs or in service projects, such as those providing medical or dental care abroad.  A group spokesperson is encouraged to contact Student Health to arrange a group consultation.

Vaccination Services

Student Health offers an extensive variety of travel vaccines, except for Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies vaccines.

  • Vaccines should be received at least thirty days before the risk of exposure for optimal benefit.
  • Students are responsible for the cost of their vaccines, as Student Health does not bill health insurance.  However, students may submit receipts to their health insurance for reimbursement as applicable.
